The Doctor of Theology is designed for experienced theologians, ministers, educators and researchers seeking the highest level of academic formation in theological study and scholarship.

The programme provides an advanced framework for sustained engagement with Scripture, Christian doctrine, theological traditions, Church history, philosophy, ethics and contemporary society. Students critically evaluate major theological systems and develop the capacity to construct coherent, rigorous and contextually responsible theological arguments.

Biblical theology courses examine the theological unity, diversity and development of Scripture. Students explore advanced approaches to biblical interpretation and consider how biblical texts inform Christian doctrine, ethics, mission, worship and ecclesial life.

Systematic theology enables students to investigate major doctrines concerning God, revelation, creation, humanity, Christ, salvation, the Holy Spirit, the Church and Christian hope. Students engage historical and contemporary theological perspectives while developing original contributions to doctrinal enquiry.

Historical theology examines the development of Christian thought across the early Church, medieval period, Reformation, modern era and contemporary global Christianity. Students evaluate how theological ideas have emerged, developed and influenced churches, institutions and societies.

The programme also addresses philosophical theology, theological ethics, contextual theology, public theology and the relationship between faith, culture and contemporary intellectual life. Students learn to engage complex theological and social questions with scholarly depth, Christian conviction and intellectual fairness.

Advanced research courses develop competence in theological method, qualitative and quantitative enquiry, interdisciplinary research, academic writing and scholarly publication. Students learn to define significant research problems, evaluate primary and secondary sources, construct defensible arguments and communicate findings to specialist and wider audiences.

Doctoral teaching and supervision courses prepare students to design advanced curricula, teach theological disciplines, supervise research and contribute to academic programme leadership. Students also explore the responsibilities of theological educators in forming intellectually rigorous, spiritually mature and ethically responsible graduates.

The 60-credit doctoral thesis is the central research component of the programme. Each student conducts a substantial and original investigation into an approved theological topic. The thesis must demonstrate methodological rigour, critical engagement with scholarship and a significant contribution to theological knowledge or practice.

Graduates are prepared for seminary and university teaching, theological research, scholarly publication, academic leadership, senior church leadership and advanced consultancy.
