Program Description
The Doctor of Pastoral Counselling is designed for experienced pastoral counsellors, care ministry leaders, educators, supervisors and researchers seeking the highest level of academic and professional formation in pastoral counselling.
The programme examines pastoral counselling as an interdisciplinary field informed by Christian theology, counselling theory, human development, spirituality, ethics and the social sciences. Students critically evaluate the theological and philosophical foundations of care while engaging contemporary research and practice.
Advanced study develops competence in pastoral assessment, case conceptualisation, trauma-informed care, family systems, grief, crisis response, spiritual care and intercultural counselling. Students examine how pastoral counsellors can respond responsibly to complex personal, relational, spiritual and community needs.
The programme places strong emphasis on ethical practice, safeguarding, informed consent, confidentiality, professional boundaries and appropriate referral. Students learn to distinguish pastoral counselling from regulated clinical professions and to recognise situations requiring intervention from licensed counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, medical practitioners, social workers or safeguarding authorities.
Doctoral study in supervision prepares students to guide pastoral counsellors, ministry-based carers and pastoral care teams through structured reflection, ethical accountability and professional development. The programme does not independently confer statutory authority to provide clinical supervision where professional registration is legally required.
Students investigate leadership and governance within pastoral counselling ministries, chaplaincy services, theological institutions and faith-based care organisations. They develop policies, supervision structures, safeguarding systems and evidence-informed approaches to service quality.
Advanced research courses develop expertise in qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, theological and practice-based inquiry. Students learn to formulate original research problems, evaluate scholarly literature, collect and analyse evidence and communicate findings to academic and professional audiences.
The programme also develops doctoral-level teaching, curriculum design, scholarly publication and research supervision capabilities. Graduates are prepared to teach pastoral counselling and related disciplines in universities, seminaries and professional education settings.
The 60-credit doctoral thesis is the central research component of the programme. Students conduct a substantial and original investigation into an approved topic in pastoral counselling, spiritual care, trauma, family studies, supervision, ethics, human development or practical theology.
Graduates are prepared for senior pastoral counselling leadership, advanced pastoral supervision, higher education teaching, research, consultancy and scholarly publication.

Admissions
Entry Requirements
A relevant master’s degree or recognised equivalent
A detailed doctoral research proposal in pastoral counselling, pastoral care or a related discipline
An academic writing sample demonstrating advanced scholarly competence
Relevant pastoral counselling, ministry, teaching, supervision or professional experience where applicable
Academic or professional references supporting the applicant’s readiness for doctoral study
Demonstrated competence in academic English
Successful completion of an interview with a faculty panel
Evidence of the capacity to undertake sustained independent doctoral research
