PhD, Christian Ministry

The Doctor of Christian Ministry provides advanced scholarly and professional formation for experienced pastors, ministers, ministry educators and Christian leaders seeking to make an original contribution to the understanding and practice of ministry.

The programme approaches ministry as a field of rigorous theological reflection, critical inquiry and evidence-based practice. It equips candidates to investigate complex ministry challenges, evaluate existing models of Christian service and develop new approaches that strengthen congregations, Christian organisations and communities.

Students engage deeply with practical theology, pastoral leadership, advanced homiletics, congregational studies, spiritual formation, discipleship, pastoral care, organisational development and the relationship between Christianity and contemporary society. The programme encourages candidates to connect biblical and theological scholarship with the lived realities of ministry.

Particular attention is given to reflective practice. Candidates examine their own leadership assumptions, ministry contexts and professional practices while learning to use research evidence to improve decision-making, programme design, pastoral care and congregational development.

Advanced research preparation develops competence in qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method and theological research. Students learn to formulate original research questions, conduct ethical fieldwork, analyse complex evidence, engage critically with academic literature and communicate findings to scholarly, ecclesial and professional audiences.

The programme culminates in a 60-credit doctoral thesis that makes an original and defensible contribution to Christian ministry or practical theology. The thesis may investigate pastoral leadership, preaching, congregational development, discipleship, spiritual formation, pastoral care, ministry education, mission, church administration or another approved area of ministry practice.

Graduates are prepared for senior pastoral leadership, ministry consultancy, theological education, advanced research, institutional leadership and the mentoring of emerging ministers. They are equipped to influence ministry practice through scholarship, teaching, policy, leadership and innovation.
