PhD, Christian Education & Ethics

The Doctor of Christian Education and Ethics is an advanced research degree for experienced educators, ethicists, ministry leaders and scholars seeking to contribute new knowledge to Christian educational theory, ethical enquiry and institutional practice.

The programme is grounded in the conviction that Christian education should cultivate intellectual maturity, moral responsibility, spiritual formation and service to society. Candidates critically examine the philosophical, theological and educational foundations of teaching, learning, curriculum and character development.

Advanced studies in Christian education engage major educational theories, pedagogical traditions, curriculum models and approaches to faith integration. Candidates evaluate how Christian institutions can provide academically rigorous education while maintaining a clear theological identity and commitment to human dignity.

The ethics component develops high-level competence in Christian moral theology, philosophical ethics and applied ethical analysis. Candidates investigate ethical questions affecting education, leadership, technology, research, public policy, social justice, professional conduct and institutional governance.

Studies in character education and moral formation examine the development of virtues, values, habits, judgement and responsibility. Candidates analyse the influence of curriculum, pedagogy, leadership, institutional culture, family, church and society on moral and spiritual development.

The programme also prepares candidates to lead research, teaching and institutional development at the highest level. Courses address doctoral pedagogy, academic supervision, curriculum leadership, quality assurance, policy development and the communication of research to scholarly, professional and public audiences.

Advanced research training includes qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, historical, theological and philosophical approaches. Candidates develop research designs appropriate to complex educational and ethical questions and engage critically with research validity, reflexivity, interpretation and scholarly integrity.

The doctoral thesis carries 60 credits and constitutes the central research component of the programme. It must present a sustained, original and defensible contribution to knowledge in Christian education, ethics or a related interdisciplinary field.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate mastery of relevant literature, methodological competence, intellectual independence and the ability to communicate findings at a standard suitable for scholarly publication and academic examination.

Graduates are prepared for university and seminary teaching, doctoral supervision, educational research, ethics scholarship, institutional leadership, policy development, consultancy and senior service within churches, schools and Christian organisations.
