About This Program
Program Description
The Master of Arts in Missiology provides advanced academic and professional preparation for graduates seeking leadership, research and specialised practice in Christian mission.
The programme examines mission as a biblical, theological, historical, cultural and organisational discipline. Students explore the mission of God, the role of the Church in mission and the relationship between evangelism, discipleship, social engagement and Christian witness.
Advanced study in the theology of mission enables students to evaluate biblical and theological perspectives on mission. Students consider how Scripture, Christian doctrine and ecclesiology shape mission priorities, methods and accountability.
Intercultural communication develops the ability to understand language, worldview, identity, values and social patterns across cultures. Students learn to communicate the Christian faith with clarity, humility and cultural sensitivity.
The programme examines world religions and interfaith engagement to prepare students for informed and respectful interaction with religiously diverse communities. Students analyse major religious traditions, interreligious relations and appropriate forms of Christian dialogue and witness.
Global Christianity courses explore the growth, diversity and changing centres of Christianity. Students assess mission movements in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, North America and other regions while considering indigenous leadership and locally rooted theology.
Church planting and movement studies prepare students to design, assess and support new Christian communities. Students examine contextualisation, discipleship, leadership development, organisational sustainability and the multiplication of healthy churches.
Mission strategy courses develop competence in situational analysis, programme design, budgeting, risk management, partnership development, monitoring and evaluation. Students learn to translate theological convictions and research findings into practical mission plans.
Digital ministry and new media enable students to examine online evangelism, social media, digital discipleship, mobile communication and emerging technologies. Students evaluate both the opportunities and ethical challenges associated with digital mission.
The programme emphasises mission ethics, safeguarding, cultural respect, responsible partnership and local leadership. Students critically examine power, dependency, colonial legacies, financial accountability and the protection of vulnerable people.
Research Methods in Theology and Advanced Research Methods and Theological Method develop competence in qualitative, quantitative, theological, ethnographic and mixed-method research.
The programme culminates in a 30-credit master’s thesis. Students conduct independent research on an approved topic in missiology, mission theology, global Christianity, church planting, intercultural studies, world religions, digital mission or mission leadership.
Graduates are prepared for mission leadership, agency direction, strategic consultancy, teaching, research and doctoral study.
