Diploma, Pastoral Counselling

The Diploma in Pastoral Counselling prepares students to provide compassionate, ethical and theologically grounded care within churches, ministries and faith-based community settings. It introduces the principles of Christian counselling while developing the interpersonal, reflective and practical skills required to support people experiencing personal, relational and spiritual challenges.

Students begin by studying Christian counselling, biblical foundations and the Christian worldview. These courses establish a theological framework for understanding human dignity, suffering, relationships, personal responsibility and spiritual growth.

The programme develops students’ knowledge of pastoral care and theology, counselling theories, counselling techniques and human development. Students learn essential helping skills such as attentive listening, empathy, appropriate questioning, basic assessment, referral and supportive communication.

Strong emphasis is placed on ethical conduct, confidentiality, professional boundaries, safeguarding and recognising situations that require referral to qualified mental health, medical or safeguarding professionals. The programme prepares graduates to offer basic pastoral support without presenting them as licensed clinical counsellors or psychotherapists.

Supervised Field Education I and II provide structured opportunities for students to apply their learning in approved churches, ministries or community settings. Through guided practice, reflection and supervision, students develop greater confidence in pastoral conversations, care ministry and responsible service.

Academic writing, critical thinking and Christian doctrine strengthen students’ ability to evaluate ideas, communicate clearly and integrate theology with practical care. Graduates are prepared for lay pastoral care roles, care ministry responsibilities and further undergraduate study.
